Action Request: Contact Your Senators to Express Your Opposition to the Federal Superfund Tax on Chemicals
We are asking CICD members to please reach out to Senators Coons and Carper regarding a proposed reinstatement of the Superfund Tax on chemicals. CICD has sent a letter on behalf of our industry expressing our concerns with the proposed tax, but it is important that they hear directly from you about how it would impact your company.
The Biden Administration is seeking to reinstate the Superfund Tax on chemicals as part of the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill. The tax expired in 1995, and the new proposal would reinstate it at double the amount from that time. Chemicals that would be impacted include:
ethylene;
propylene;
benzene;
chlorine;
sulfuric acid;
hydrochloric acid;
and many more.
American Chemistry Council (ACC) economists have produced a detailed analysis of the impacts of the tax to the industry of chemistry and the economy. The tax could negatively impact the number of chemistry jobs, disadvantage domestic manufacturers, worsen supply shortages and increase the costs of most consumer goods. See this one-pager from ACC for a short summary.
The proposal is currently being negotiated in the U.S. Senate. Now is the perfect time to reach out and let your Senators know how a tax like this would impact your company. Click here to email Senator Chris Coons and click here to email Senator Tom Carper.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to with any questions you may have on this issue.
Thank you,
CICD Team
